QuestionAnswer
Chemistry is... a study of the composition, structure and properties of matter and of changes that occur in matter.
Matter is... Anything that has mass and volume.
Macroscopic level is... anything that can be seen with the unaided eye.
Microscopic level is... Anything that is so small they can only be viewed using an instrument.
Atoms are... The smallest distinctive units in a sample of matter.
Molecules are... The combination of multiple atoms.
Composition refers to... The types of atoms and their relative proportions in a sample.
Physical properties are... a characteristic displayed by a sample of matter without undergoing any change in composition. I.e. odor, color, etc.
Chemical properties are... characteristics displayed by samples of matter as they undergo a change in composition. I.e. rate at which it burns.
Qualitative properties are... properties that do not depend on the amount of a substance. I.e. color, odor, density, flammability, etc.
Quantitative properties are... properties that depend on how much of a substance is present. I.e. mass, volume, etc.
A physical change is... Where matter undergoes a change at the macroscopic level but not the microscopic. I.e. water boiling
A chemical change/reaction is... Where a sample of matter undergoes a change in composition and/or its structure.
