| blood alcohol concentration (BAC) | amount of alcohol in the blood. a person with a BAC of 0.08 percent or more is considered intoxicated and unable to drive safely. a smaller BACcan make a person unsafe to drive |
| intoxication | having to much alcohol in your bloodstream to drive |
| proof | strength of alcohol. the higher the proof, the stronger the alcohol |
| absorption rate | rate at which alcohol is absorbed in |
| oxidized | mixed with oxygen. when alcohol inside you is oxidized, its mixed with the oxygen in your body and then removed by the liver |
| designated driver | person who is chosen to drive everyone home from somewhere. designated driver does not drink |

| depressant | slow down teh central nervous system. alcohol is a depressent |
| stimulant | a drug that speeds up the central nervous system |
| amphetamines | drugs are a type of stimulant |
| hallucinogens | illegal drug that can cause a false sense of things |
| marijuana | illegal drug that causes distorion in ones mental and physical abilities |
| antihistamine | over the counter medicine for colds and allergies. cause drowsiness and has other side effects that impair you driving abilities |
| synergistic | caused by mixing two or more things together |
| consume | to take into your body |

| implied consent law | when you get your drivers liscense you agree to be tested for BAC and other drugs if stopped for suspicion of drug use when driving |
| illegal per se laws | making it illegal to drive after drinking alcohol or using drugs even if no other laws are broken |
| DWI, DUI, operating while impaired(OWI) | the law against driving if you have blood alcohol concentration that is more than 0.08 percent |
| zero tolerance law | ilegal for a person under the age of 21 to drive with any measurable amount of alcohol in the blood |
| intoxilyzer | machine that tests a person's breath for BAC |
| field sobriety test | roadside tests that help an officer detect wheter a driver is sober or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs |
| nystagmus | involuntary jerking of the eyes as a person gazes to the side. type of field sobriety test |
