QuestionAnswer
What is a compound? Two elements that are chemically combined in a fixed ratio
what are chemical bonds? the attractive forces that hold different atoms or ions together
Ammonia,vinegar,sand,sugar,rubbing,alcohol, water(H2O) examples of compounds
chemical formula short hand way of writing a chemical name
subscripts tells the # of atoms
superscripts tells the charger or oxidation
ionic bonds network structure(strong bond), high melting point, dissociate in water, gain and lose e-
covalent bonds molecule structure(weak bond), share electrons, low melting do not dissociate in water
what is common between covalent and ionic bonds? both try to make elements happy(stable)
what is a ion? an atom that is either a positively(cation) or negatively(anion) charged
what is a ionic bond? the force of the attraction between the opposite charges of ions(metal/nonmetal)
what is a molecules? neutral particles formed as a result of electrons sharing
what is a covalent bond? the bond between atoms when they share electrons(happens between two nonmetals)
Non-polar in a molecule when the atoms share evenly Ex:H2,N2,O2,F2,Cl2,Br2,I2
polar when one atom is has a stronger attraction for the electrons than the other Ex:CO2,H2O
what is a polyatomic ion? a group of covalently bonded atoms that have either lost or gained electrons.
a metallic bond a bond formed by the attraction between positively charged metal ions and the electrons around them Ex:Cu,Au,Ag,Zn
organic most any covalently bonded atom that contains carbon in it(anything that is alive)
inorganic most compounds that do not contain the element carbon Ex:CO,CO2

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
