Chemistry- Chapter 1

QuestionAnswer
Chemistry the study of composition, structure, and properties of matter and the changes it undergoes
What are the types of sciences? social, natural, biological, chemistry and physics
What are the six branches of chemistry? organic, inorganic, physical, biochemistry, analytical, and theoretical
Organic the study of all things containing carbon
Inorganic the study of all things not containing carbon
Physical the study of the properties and changes of matter, and its reaction to energy
Biochemisty the study of any substances or processes in any living thing
Analytical the identification of components and composition of materials
Theoretical the use of mathematics and calculations to understand the principles behind observed chemical behavior and to design and predict the properties of new compounds
What is the difference between intensive and extensive properties? Intensive properties do not depend on the amount of matter present and extensive properties do depend on the amount of matter present.
What are ten signs that a chemical change has occurred? 1. A gas has been produced 2. A precipitate forms 3. A color change occurs 4. The temperature changes 5. Light is emitted 6. Odor is given off 7. Change in taste 8. Change in volume 9. Change in electrical current 10. Change in melting or boiling
What are seven characteristics of metals? 1. Good conductors 2. Shiny 3. most are solid at room temperature 4. malleable 5. ductile 6. high tensile strength 7. most are grayish/white luster
What are two characteristics of nonmetals? 1. Poor conductors 2. Many are gases at room temperature
What is the fundamental unit for mass? kilogram
What is the fundamental unit for length? meter
What is the fundamental unit for time? seconds
What is the fundamental unit for temperature? kelvin
What is the fundamental unit for the number of particles? mole

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
