| terms | definitions |

| fantasy | fictional events and details that do not occur in real life. |
| figurative language | language used for describing but is not meant to be taken literally (similes, metaphors - used for comparing) |
| folk tale | old story passed on by word of mouth |
| Haiku | 3 line poem usually about nature |
| image | picture that is created using words |
| inference | conclusion (or what you can figure out) that comes from information that you read |
| limerick | funny 5 line poem |
| fiction | prose narrative work; stories that are imagined but not necessarily true |
| flashback | shows an event that happened earlier in the story |
| foreshadowing | clues by the writer to prepare the reader for something that will happen later in the story |
| hero | main character or protagonist |
| imagery | language that uses your senses (seeing, hearing, smelling, etc.) |
| irony | way something actually is is different than it seems to be (character may seem nice yet really is sneaky and unkind) |
