| alliteration | repeating beginning sounds (Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers) |
| allusion | where one piece of literature makes reference (talks about) another piece of work (Outsiders mentions another book called Great Expectations) |
| anecdote | a short, true event that is meant to entertain |
| atmosphere | mood or feeling of a book (suspense, humor, sadness, etc.) |
| audience | a group that reads, listens or watches |
| autobiography | story of a person's life that is written by that person |
| cause and effect | an action or event produces another response to that action or event |
| character | person, animal or thing involved in a story |
| characterization | personality of a character and how the author develops a character |
| chronological order | time order in which events happen |
| climax | the point in the story which has the highest interest or greatest emotional involvement |
| comparison and contrast | how items are the same or different |
| Concrete Language | specific words that appeal to the five senses |
