solution a mixture which can contain one or more substances.the particles of one or more substance are spread evenly throughout the other substance. e.g. salt dissolved in water
solute the substance that is dissolved in another substance.e.g. sugar is dissolved in water
solvent the substance which the solute is dissolved in. e.g. water is a good solvent.
suspension when a solid is mixed into a liquid and the particles of the solid can be seen in the liquid.
fitration a method of separation used to separate solids from liquids.
sieving used to separate two solids mixed together or a solid mixed with a liquid. often used when one substance has particles much larger than the other.
crstallisation heating up the solution and letting the solvent evaporate into the air, leaving behind the solute. e.g. heating salt solution is a way to separate salt from water.
decanting pouring the liquid from the mixture and leaving the solid behind.
