solution | a mixture which can contain one or more substances.the particles of one or more substance are spread evenly throughout the other substance. e.g. salt dissolved in water |
solute | the substance that is dissolved in another substance.e.g. sugar is dissolved in water |
solvent | the substance which the solute is dissolved in. e.g. water is a good solvent. |
suspension | when a solid is mixed into a liquid and the particles of the solid can be seen in the liquid. |
fitration | a method of separation used to separate solids from liquids. |
sieving | used to separate two solids mixed together or a solid mixed with a liquid. often used when one substance has particles much larger than the other. |
crstallisation | heating up the solution and letting the solvent evaporate into the air, leaving behind the solute. e.g. heating salt solution is a way to separate salt from water. |
decanting | pouring the liquid from the mixture and leaving the solid behind. |
