6th grade science chapter 12 cell structure and function

QuestionAnswer
What are the basic units of structure and function in living things called? cells
What invention made it possible for people to discover and learn about cells? microscope
What is a widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells and living things called? cell theory
What three statements does the cell theory state: 1. All living things are composed of cells. 2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. 3. All cells are produced from other cells.
What is a microscope? An instrument that makes small objects look larger.
What are some functions that cells perform in living things? obtaining oxygen, getting rid of waste, obtaining food, and growing.
How did the invention of the microscope contribute to knowledge about living things? It made the discovering of cells possible and to learn what their different functions are.
What does structure mean? where you describe what it is made of and how its parts are put together.
What does function mean? process that enable it to stay alive and reproduce.
Who were the first people to observe cells? Robert Hooke and Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Who were the three scientist that helped develop the cell theory? Schleiden, Schwann and Virchow
What did Schleiden contribute to the cell theory? that all plants are made up of cells.
What did Schwann contributre to the cell theory? that all animals are made up of cells and all living things are made up of cells.
What did Virchow contribute to the cell theroy? That new cells are formed only from cells that already exist. "All cells come from cells"
What is magnification? the ability to make things look larger then they are.
What do lenses do? The lenses in light microscopes magnify and object by bending the light that passes through them.
What is an organelle A tiny cells structure that carries out a specific function within a cell.
A rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms. cell wall
A cell structure that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell cell membrane
What is a nucleus It is the cell's control center, directing all of the cell's activities. The brain of the cell.
What is cytoplasm the region between the cell membrane and the nucleus- gel-like fluids.
________________ are known as the "powerhouse" of the cell because they convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions. mitochondria
The ___________________ passageways carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another. endoplasmic reticulum
What are the small grainlike bodies thats function as factories to produce proteins? ribosomes
A property of a cell membranes that allows some substances to pass through, while others cannot. selectively permeable
What is the main method by which small molecules move across the cell membrane? diffusion
What is the diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane? osmosis
Why is osmosis important? Because most cells cannot function properly without water and they depend on osmosis.
The movement of dissolved materials through a cell memebrane without using cellular energy is called? passive transport
What is the movement of materials through a cell membrane using cellular energy? Active Transport
What is the difference between passive and active transport? Active transport requires the cell to use its own energy while passive transport does not.
