base when a number is raised to a power, the number that is used as a factor
exponent a number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor.
power a number produced by raising a base to an exponent
scientific notation a method of writing very large or very small numbers using powers of 10
order of operations a rule for evaluating expressions
associative property for all real numbers, the sum is the same, regardless of their grouping.
commutative property two or more numbers can be added in any order without changing the sum.
identity property the sum of zero and any # is the #: the product of 1 and any number is the #.
algebraic expression an expression that contains at least one variable
constant a value that does not change
evaluate to find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression.
variable a symbol used to represent a quantity that can change
coefficient the number that is multiplied by the variable in an algebraic expression
term the parts of an expression that are added or subtracted.
equation a mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equivalent.
solution a value or values that make an equation or inequality true
inverse operations operations that undo each other.
absolute value the distance of a number from zero on a number line, shown by | |.
integer the set of whole numbers and their opposites, including zero.
opposite two numbers that are an equal distance from zero on a number line.
composite number a number greater than 1 that has more than two whole-number factors
prime factorization a number written as the product of its prime factors
prime number a whole number greater than 1 that has exactly two factors: itself and 1.
GCF the largest common factor of two or more numbers.
LCM the least number, other than zero, that is a multiple of two or more given numbers.
multiple the product of any number and any nonzero whole number is a multiple of that number
equivalent fractions fractions that name the same amount or part
improper fractions a fraction in which the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.
mixed number a number made up of a whole number that is not zero, and a fraction.
repeating decimal a decimal in which one or more digits repeat infinitely.
