| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything occupying space and having mass |
| 3 states of Matter | Solid, Liquid, Gas |
| Plasma | Ionized gas, 4th state of matter |
| 3 states of water | Ice, Steam, Water |
| A solid | is rigid and has a fixed volume |
| A liquid | Has a definite volume and assumes the shape of it's container |
| A gas | has no fixed volume or shape ( takes the shape and volume of it's container) |
| Physical Properties | The characteristics of matter that can be changed without changing the composition and the characteristics are directly observable |
| Chemical Properties | The characteristic that determine how the composition of matter changes as a result of contact with other matter of the influence of energy |
| Physical Change | Change in the form of a substance, not in its chemical composition |
| Chemical Change | A given substance becomes a new substance or substances with different properties and different composition |
| Element | A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical methods |
| Compound | A substance composed of a given combination of elements that can be broken down into those elements by chemical methods |
| A compound contains | different elements |
| A compound has | the same composition of atoms |
| Pure Substance | Always have the same composition and either have elements or compounds |
| Mixtures | Have a variable composition, Can be separated into pure substances |
| Homogeneous Mixture | A solution that has visibly indistinguishable parts |
| Heterogeneous Mixtures | Has visibly distinguishable parts |
| Filtration | Separates a liquid from a solid |
