A solid is rigid and has a fixed volume
A liquid Has a definite volume and assumes the shape of it's container
A gas has no fixed volume or shape ( takes the shape and volume of it's container)
Physical Properties The characteristics of matter that can be changed without changing the composition and the characteristics are directly observable
Chemical Properties The characteristic that determine how the composition of matter changes as a result of contact with other matter of the influence of energy
Physical Change Change in the form of a substance, not in its chemical composition
Chemical Change A given substance becomes a new substance or substances with different properties and different composition
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical methods
Compound A substance composed of a given combination of elements that can be broken down into those elements by chemical methods
A compound contains different elements
A compound has the same composition of atoms
Pure Substance Always have the same composition and either have elements or compounds
Mixtures Have a variable composition, Can be separated into pure substances
Homogeneous Mixture A solution that has visibly indistinguishable parts
Heterogeneous Mixtures Has visibly distinguishable parts
Filtration Separates a liquid from a solid
