Unit I Atomic Model Terms

QuestionAnswer
What is a proton? A positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom, is equal to 1 amu
What is a neutron? A neutrally charged particle in the nucleus of an atom, is equal to 1 amu.
What is an electron? A negatively charged particle outside of the nucleaus of the atom, is negatively charged.
Atomic mass number Total number of protons and neutrons
Atomic number Total number of protons
Ion A charged atom or molecule. Ions of atoms have unequal numbers of protons and electrons.
Isotopes Two atoms with the same protons, but a difference number of neutrons.
Atom The simplest unit of an element.
