interpret the meaning of the "ships" metaphor used in the first 2 paragraphs of the novel. "ships" is used to describe the men's dreams & goals. this novel portrays that only women achieve their goals & dreams & men's dreams are mocked by time
what is Pheoby watson's reaction to janie's return? she was happy to see janie. She brought her a meal
what significance does the pear tree hold for janie? she saw her life like a great tree, things suffered, things enjoyed, things done, & undone..dawn & doom was in the branches. The author uses a peartree & nature to describe janie's sex life.
why does nanny react so strongly to seeing janie kiss johnny taylor? she got mad b/c she thinks johnny taylor is a "trashy nigger' & she doesnt want janie to get involved. she wants her to get married right away
explain nanny's views on romantic love. she thinks romantic love only exsists if you're secure with your lover
what does janie assume will happen once she marries logan? is she right? she thinks it will make her fall in love with logan & when she marries him she realizes she doesn't love him.
hurston writes "she knew now that marriage did not make love" at the end of chapt. 3. explain the significanceof this revelation to janie. janie had a dream that marriage made love but now that she knew it didnt, her dream was dead so she became a woman.
describe logan's attitude toward janie. how does it change over time? before logan/janie got married logan treated her well & w/ respect..now in ch. 4, he seems annoyed with her b/c he thinks shes spoilled rotten & stops talking in rhyme to her
describe janie's first impression of joe starks. she was attracted to the stylish dressed man

why is the fact that tea cake asks janie to play checkers significant to janie? b/c jody never ased her to play or wanted her to play so she feels a new freedom she's never felt before
explain janie's belief that marriage is a gamble & why she is willing to take a chance w/ tea cake. janie's grandmother always told her to marry for class, but now janie wants to take a chance on someone that treats her right
define the muck & describe tea cake's attraction to it. the muck has rich fertile fields & tea cake is familiar with this life in the muck & immediately gets them settled.
tea cake orders janie to stop associating w/ mrs.turner, why doesnt it work? bc as much as janie tried to ignore her, she wouldnt quit visiting her bc janie was considered a higher class by mrs. turner bc of her skin tone
