Name 2 types of interference that can apply to sound waves. How is sound affected by each type? When a compression of one wave overlaps a compression of another wave, constructive interference. When a compression of one wave overlaps a rarefaction of another wave, destructive interference.
Is it possible for one sound wave to completely cancel another so that no sound is left? Explain. Yes, interference can cause dead spots in auditoriums where reflected sound waves destructively interfere with unreflected waves.
Why does destructive interference occur when the path lengths from 2 identical sources differ by half a wavelength? The rarefaction of one wave matches the compression of another = no sound
What causes beats? When 2 tones of slightly different frequency are sounded together a regular fluctuation in the loudness of the combined sounds is heard.
What is the beat frequency when 494 HZ tuning fork and 496 Hz tuning fork are sounded together? 2HZ
