Math Vocabulary

| absolute value | the distance a number is from zero on a number line |
| additive inverse | the opposite of a number; the other number that is the same distance from zero on the number line |
| algebraic expression | a mathematical phrase involving at least one variable and sometimes numbers and operation symbols. |
| coefficient | the numberical factor of a term that contains a variable |
| conjecture | an educated guess believed to be true |
| constant | a term without a variable; a plain number |
| counterexample | an example that proves a statement false |
| equation | a mathematical sentence that contains an equal sign |
| evaluate | to find the value of [a numberical or algebraic expression] |
| integer | a positive or negative number, including zero, that does not contain a fraction or decimal |
| inverse operations | operations that undo each other (such as addition and subtraction) |
| opposites | two numbers that are equal distance from zero on a number line but are on opposite sides of zero so that they have different signs |
| subsitute | to replace a variable with a number or another equal expression |
| variable | a letter or symbol used to represent an unknown number |
| property | a rule that is true for any numbers |
| mastery | great skillfulness and knowledge of some subject or activity |
| order of operations | the order in which operations in an expression to be evaluated are carried out. 1. parentheses or other grouping symbols 2. exponents 3. multiplication and division 4. addition and subtraction |
| term | a number, a variable, or the product of numbers and variables |
| like terms | terms that have the same variable and the same exponent |
