Writing Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Author's Purpose The author's reason for creating a particular work. It may be to entertain, to explain, to inform, to express an opinion or to persuade readers to do or believe something.
Narrator Teller of the story
Point of View The persepctive a story is told from
First person The narrator is the character in the story. Uses first person pronouns I, me, we, us
Third Person Limited The narrator is NOT in the story, and the story is told from one person's point of view. Uses pronouns he,she, it, they, them
Third Person Omniscient The narrator is not a character in the story but can tell the point of view of all of the characters. Uses pronouns he, she, it they, them.
Narrative writing Writing that tells a story. Events may be real or imaginary. Includes myths, short stories, novels, and narrative poems.
Writing process The steps a writer takes to complete a written piece of work.
Brainstorming Exploring ideas on a subject, often the first thing that comes to mind
Graphic Organizers A visual, organized way to put information together. May include charts, benn diagrams, clusters maps, outlines.
Rough Draft The starting point of writing. Main ideas are written down. Still needs some polishing
Revise Work is checked for meaning and changes are made
Edit Work is checked for correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
Sensory details Words and phrases that help readers see, hear , taste, feel and smell what an author is describing.
Plot Sequence of events that makes up a story
Character Person, character or imaginary creature that takes part in the action of a story.
Setting The time and plae of the action of a story.
Introduction The beginning of a written piece that catches the readers interest and lets the reader know the topic of the writing.
Body The main idea of a written piece is supported and explained
Conclusion The end of a written piece that leaves the reader with a strong message on the topic of the piece.
