Literary Voabulary

QuestionAnswer
syntax The study of the pattern in the formation of sentences or phrases in language
diction a writer's or speaker's choice of words
tone an attitude of expression in speech or written language
connotation the "emotional" meaning of a word; an idea that is suggested or implied
denotation the direct or dictionary meaning of a word
mode a method or particular form
discourse verbal or written expression in speech or writing
perspective point of view
metacognition the analysis of the process of one’s thinking
perception awareness
epic a long, narrtive poem recounting the heroic deeds of a legendary or traditional character who embodies the values of a particular society
motif recurrent themes or images in a literary or artistic work
kenning expression used in place of a name or noun; for example, "dolphin path" is a kenning for sea.
ambiguity an event or situation that may be interpreted in more than one way
alliteration the repetition of a sound, especially a consonant, in two or more words for rhetorical or poetic effect
allusion a reference to something or someone that is known
analogy a comparison to show between two things to show how they are alike. Metaphors and similes are based on these.
anastrophe an inversion of the normal syntactic order of words
antagonist an adversary
