Type of Function | Description |
---|---|
parabolic function | "U" shaped, 2 is the highest power of x, a polynomial function (all coefficients are real and all exponents are integers) |
linear function | line, has a slope and y intercept, y=mx+b, highest power of x is 1, a polynomial function (all coefficients are real and all exponents are integers) |
absolute value function | lxl, graph looks like a v |
rational function (reciprocal, or hyperbolic function) | two branches, asymptotes, x on the bottom of a fraction. |
radical function | square root function, starts at a point, starts steep then gets shallower forever |
cubic function | sideways "s", highest power of x is 3, a polynomial function (all coefficients are real and all exponents are integers) |
quartic function | can be W shaped, highest power of x is 4, a polynomial function (all coefficients are real and all exponents are integers) |
quintic function | highest power of x is 5, a polynomial function (all coefficients are real and all exponents are integers) |
constant function | y=10, flat line, y is a constant value, it does not vary depending on an x value. A polynomial function where there is no x variable. |
vertical line | this is not a function. It fails the vert line test. x=5, slope infinity (undefined) |
