QuestionAnswer
What is atomic radius? The atomic radius is the radius of an atom.
What is Ionic radius? The ionic radius is the radius of an ion.
What is Ionization energy? Ionization energy is the measure of how hard it is to remove an electron from an atom.
What is electronegativity? Electronegetivity is an atom's ability to attract electrons in a covalent bond.
What is the trend of atomic radius? The atomic radius increases down a group because as more energy levels are added the atom gets larger. The atomic radius decreases across a period because in the same energy level as the number of protons increase, the charge of the atom becomes greater
What is the trend of atomic radius? (cont.) the outermost electron cloud is pulled closer to the nucleus and the atoms becomes more compacted, thus making the radius smaller.
What is the trend of Ionization energy? Ionization energy increases across a period because as the charge of the atom gets stronger then the harder it becomes to pull an electron out. Ionization energy decreases down a group because as an atom gets larger, it becomes less compacted thus
What is the trend of Ionization energy? (cont.) making it easier to remove an electron from it.
What is the trend of electronegetivity? Electronegetivity increases across a period because elements on the right want to gain an electron to become a stable element (noble gas). Electronegetivity decreases down a group because as more electron shells are added the pull is less stronger so it
What is the trend of electronegetivity? (cont.) becomes harder to attract electrons.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
