| algebraic expression | A mathmathemtical phrase that uses variables, numbers, and operations. |
| variable | A letter that stands for a number. |
| evaluate | Replace each variable with a number. Then follow the order of operations. |
| equation | A mathematical sentence with an equal sign. |
| open sentence | An equation with one or more variables. |
| solution | Is any value or values that make an equation or inequality true. |
| inverse operation | Are operations that undo each other. |
| Subtraction Property of Equality | States that if the same number is subtracted from each side of an equation, the results are equal. |
| Addition Property of Equality | States that if the same value is added to each side of an equation, the results are equal. |
| Division Property of Equality | States that if both sides of an equation are divided by the same nonzero number, the results are equal. |
| Multiplication Property of Equality | States that if each side of an equation is multiplied by the same number, the results are equal. |
| Distributive Property | How multiplication affects addition or subtraction: 3 x (7+5) = (3x7) + (3x5) |
