| rhythm | the pattern of stressed and unstressed beats in a poem |
| line numbers | the numbers used to mark lines of poetry, located to the left of the poem and usually counted by 5s |
| hyperbole | exaggeration |
| free verse | a poem that does not rhyme, has no particular rhythm, nor any special line length |
| connotation | the feeling or emotion associated with a word |
| alliteration | repeating consonant sounds at the beginning of words |
| assonance | the same vowel sound used in words in a poem |
| stanza | a group of lines in a poem separated by a space |
| verse | a single line of poetry |
| lyric poem | highly musical form of poetry with a stron beat and rhythm |
| metaphor | comparing 2 things without using "like" or "as" |
