| Formal Language | Language which excludes slang, colloquial expressions, contraction and most jargon |
| Colloquial Language | Words and phrases that belong to everyday speech and conversation |
| Sensationalism | The use of exciting or shocking stories or language at the expense of accuracy in order to provoke public interest or excitement |
| Generalisation | A statement or view that makes a claim about a group and ignores the specific members of the group. |
| Euphemism | An expression used to avoid directly saying something distasteful, unpleasing or confronting. |
| Tautology | Saying something twice but in different words |
| Rhetorical Question | A question asked where no answer is expected |
| Inclusive Language | Language which seeks to minimise social and institutional offense |
| Objective Language | Language which does not include emotions and rather focuses on facts |
| Subjective Language | Language involving personal feelings and emotions |
| Assonance | Repetition of a vowel sound |
| Alliteration | Repetition of a consonant sound |
| Onomatopoeia | A word that has the same meaning as its sound |
| Personification | When inanimate objects or ideas are given human qualities |
| Simile | A person or object is said to be like another |
| Metaphor | A comparison between unlike things where one is said to be another |
| Figurative Language | Language that is meant to convey more than the literal meaning of words |
| Symbolism | The use of symbols in the arts including music and literature |
| Pun | A play on words |
| Noun | Words which name an object, animal or person |
| Abstract Noun | A noun denoting an abstract concept such as ideas, emotions, feelings or qualities |
| Adjective | Words that describe nouns |
| Adverb | Words which describe verbs |
