| Epithet | a descriptive word or phrase added to nickname. Ex. Alexander the great |
| Genre | a kind, category, or sort. |
| Imagery | figurative or descriptive language to create an image in readers mind. |
| Inference | any process of reasoning from premises to a conclusion |
| Harangue | a scolding or a long intense verbal attack |
| Hyperbaton | the use of a word order other that the expected or usual one |
| Icon | a sign or representation that stands for an object by virtue of resemblance or analogy to it |

| Gestalt | things that come together to form something greater than the parts. Cake more than ingredients. |
| Reminiscence | the act or process of recalling past experiences, events, etc. |
| Satire | use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule in exposing vice |

| Paradox | a statement or proposition that seems self contradicting but in reality expresses a possible truth |
| Parody | mimicry of someone's individual manner in a humorous or satirical way |
| Pathos | the power of arising feelings of pity, sorrow, etc |
| Poetic Justice | the rewarding of virtue and punishing of vice |
| Pseudonym | a fictitious name used by an author to conceal his or her identity |
| Quest | the act or instant of looking for, seeking, search |
| Sarcasm | harsh or bitter derision or irony |
| Allusion | indirect reference to another character, book, etc. |
| Antagonist | a character that is opposing the protagonist |

| Hyperbole | describing something by overreacting a lot |
| Metonymy | a word substitutes a person or thing based on job or personality |
| Understatement | a statement that is not strong enough to describe what really happened: "It was a tough go" |
| Juxtaposition | to place close together or side by side |
| Motif | a recurring subject, theme, idea, etc. |
| Oxymoron | contradictory terms used in conjunction: living death |
| Paraphrase | a restatement of a text or passage giving the meaning in another form |
| Plot | the action of the story |
| Exposition | background information before action begins |
| Conflict | a struggle or cash between opposing forces |
| Hubris | excessive pride or self confidence that leads to the downfall of character |
| Foil | a person or thing that makes another seem better or worse by contrast |
| Denouement | the outcome or resolution |
