Poetry Terms

QuestionAnswer
alliteration repetition of initial sounds
assonance repetition of vowel sounds
consonance repetition of consonant sounds
imagery words or phrases that appeal to any sense
metaphor a comparison; usually using is or was
meter the recurrence of a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables
onomatopoeia the use of words which imitate sound
personification figure of speech which gives animals, ideas, and objects human traits
Point of View the teller; 1st, 3rd, 3rd omniscient
Repetition the repeating of words, phrases, lines, or stanzas
Rhyme the similarity of ending sounds existing between two words
simile a comparison between two objects using like, as, or than
stanza a grouping of two or more lines of a poem in terms of length or rhyme scheme
paradox a statement that seems untrue, that seems to contradict itself
symbol something that stands for something else
apostrophe a figure of speech that references (dead) person
