poetry

QuestionAnswer
metaphor? A comparison between two things NOT using the words like or as.
simile? an explicit comparison between two different things, actions, or feelings, using the words “like” or “as”. A simile is more tentative and decorative than a metaphor. (“ A comparison using words as ‘like’ or ‘as.’”)
free verse? Poetry that does not conform to any regular meter; line length is irregular, and there may or may not be a rhyme scheme present. (In free verse, you are “free” to do what you want.”
blank verse?
Dissonance? harshness of sound or rhythm, either inadvertent or deliberate; nearly equivalent to cacophony, but dissonance usually denotes a lack of harmony in a series of sounds rather than just one word/sound.
alliteration? the repetition (repeat)of sounds in nearby words, usually using the first consonant sounds of the words; it is often used to reinforce meaning or to imitate a sound relevant to what is being described (“Fair freedom’s flying flag…”)
allusion? reference to a famous literary, mythological, biblical or historical event/figure. An allusion adds to the depth or meaning of a poem because it reminds the reader of an entire story or event that can be applied to the poem.
ballad? a narrative poem, usually containing much repetition and a repeated refrain (or chorus). Ballads were originally folk songs passed on from age to age for the purpose of telling a story.
Couplet? a pair of rhyming lines – usually the same length. (If using iambic pentameter, sometimes called ‘heroic couplets.)
Symbol? in the simplest sense, anything that stands for or represents something else beyond it – usually an idea conventionally associated with it. (Flags and crosses can function symbolically; so can words.)
Sonnet? a lyric poem comprising 14 rhyming lines of equal length; iambic pentameter in English.
hyperbole? is exaggeration for the purpose of dramatic effect – comic or serious.
personification? A figure of speech by which animals, abstract ideas, or inanimate objects are referred to as if they were human.
