Literary Terms 2

QuestionAnswer
Genre one of the types of literature such as fiction or poeter, or a type of literary work such as detective fiction or epic poetry.
Plot The plan or ground work for a story
Exposition The introduction of all things necessary for the development of a plot.
Rising action The stage in the plot, where we see the beginning difficulties which seem overwhelming & insoluble
Climax The high point of conflict & tension in a story also called turning point
Falling action The overturning of the dramatic plot, time of avoidance or delay before the conclusion(catastrophe)
Resolution(denouement) The final stage of plot development, in which everything is explained & resolved
Flashback Is a method of narration in which past events are introduced into a present action
foreshadowing are hints or clues that tip the reader off, as to what is to come in later in the work
Point of view Is the voice of the story, the speaker who does the narrating
Omniscient point of view, that the activities and thoughts of all the characters are open & fully known by the speaker
Limited Omniscience the point of view, from which only one character activities, thoughts are open & known by the speaker
Objectivity dramatic point of view. 3rd person narration, reporting speech & action but excluding commentary on the action or thought on the characters
aside a speech usually short, delivered by character to the audience
setting The environment in which characters live & move, including possessions, homes, ways of life, era, assumptions etc. EX: the setting of farewell to Manzanar (the camp)
Characterization The verbal(or film) representation of a human being the way a character is portrayed. EX: in the movie Forrest Gump is characterized as person who overcomes deficiencies to achieve greatness
Dynamic character A character who recognizes, changes with & tries to adjust to circumstances. EX:In the film The Blindside Micheal Oher realizes his potential as a student with help of a tough,but understanding tutor
Static Character A character who undergoes no change in narrative( or film). EX:Ferris Buller in Ferris Bueller Day off experience close calls through out but is still the same loving scoundrel to the end
Protagonist Central & focus of interest in a narrative, drama or film. Ex: Mark wahlberg is the protagonist in the film, The fighter
Antagonist The person, idea, force or general set of circumstances opposing the protagonist. EX: In the film 127 hours the boulders pinning the climber's arm serve as the protagonist
Foil A character, usually minor designed to highlight qualities of a major character.EX:In the batman movies, Robin is Batman foil
Structure The arrangement & placement of material in a work. The film Slumdog Millionaire which is structured around the questions in a televisions show.
Tone The techniques & modes of presentations that reveal or create attitudes
Style The manipulation of language the placement of words in the service of content
Symbolism A specific word, idea or object that may stand for ideas, values, persons or way of life. EX: Papa's cane in farewell to Manzanar becomes a symbol of his ancestors lifestyle (disable)
Idea(theme) concept, thought, opinion or belief in lit unifying centralizing conception. EX: one of themes in Manzanar is Shikata ga nai- it cant be helped
Allegory A narrative that may also be applied to parallel set of moral, philosophical, political, religious or social situations
Tragedy A work that recounts the fall or misfortune of an individual, who while suffering deals with the situations he faces & demonstrates the value of human effort & existence
Comedy Work in which confusions & doubts are resolved, usually characterized by smiles, jokes & laughter
Persona The narrator of a story or poem, the point of view often an independent character who is completely imagined consistently maintained by the author
Soliloquy A speech made by a character alone on stage, directly to the audience, revealing his or her inner thought feelings, hopes & plans
dialogue The speeches of two or more character in a work EX: The chapter in Manzanar with papa & the interviewer
Catharsis The release of emotions of pity & fear by audience at the end of tragedy
Atmosphere(mood) The emotional aura invoked by work most ghost stories begin with "It is a dark ...
Epiphany When a character suddenly experience a deep realization about himself & herself EX: Jeanne realizes she is a separate entity from her parents when her sister has a baby.
