allusion a reference to a historical figure, place, or event
simile a direct comparison between two basically different things. Introduced by the words "like or as"
metaphor an implied comparison between two basically different things. not using like or as.
hyperbole a great exaggeration to emphasize strong feelings
personification human characteristics given to non-human things
imagery the use of concrete details that appeal to the five senses
irony a contrast between what is said and what is meant. Also, when things turn out different than what is expected.
mood overall atmosphere or prevailing emotional feeling of a work
paradox a seemingly self-contradictory statement that still is true
point of view the vantage point from which an author presents the action in a work
1st person i or me. tale related by a character in a story.
3rd person story told by someone not in a story plot. "he she they"
end rhyme repetition of identical sounds at ends of lines of poetry
internal rhyme repetition of identical sounds within a line of poetry
slant rhyme also known as a half rhyme occurs when the vowed sounds ore not quite identical also known as force rhyme
repetition repeating a sound, word, phrase, or more in a work for emphasis
alliteration repetition of constant sounds at beginning of words
assonance repetition of similar vowel sounds followed by different consonant
consonance repetition of consonant sounds that are preceeded by different vowel sounds
onomatopoeia words that suggst sounds made by objects
symbol/symbolism something concrete such as an object, action, character, or scene that stands for something abstract such as a concept or an idea
theme main idea or underlining meaning of a literary work
(heroic) couplet a pair of rhymed verse lines that contain a complete thought
