| noun | A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. |
| verb | A word that shows action, being, or links a subject to a subject complement. |
| pronoun | A word that takes the place of a noun. |
| adjective | A word that modifies, or describes, a noun or pronoun. |
| adverb | A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. |
| interjection | A word that shows emotion but has no grammatical function. |
| conjunction | A word that joins two words or two groups of words. |
| preposition | A word that shows a relationship between its object and another word in the sentence. |
| clause | A group of words that contains a subject and its predicate. |
| prepositional phrase | A group of words beginning with a preposition |
| subject | The noun or subject pronoun that the sentence is about. |
| gerund | A noun made from an –ing verb |
| participle | An adjective made out of a verb |
| predicate | The verb and other words that are about the subject. |
| infinitive | A noun or modifier made from the to- form of the verb |
| independent clause | A group of words that expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence |
| indirect object | A noun or object pronoun that is indirectly affected by the action verb, and that is located between the action verb and the direct object. |
| dependent clause | A group of words that does NOT express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence (usually begins with a subordinating conjunction) |
| direct object | A noun or object pronoun that receives the action of the action verb. |
| subject complement | A noun, subject pronoun, or adjective that is linked to the subject by a linking verb and tells more about the subject. |
| verbal | A verb form used as a different part of speech |
| appositive | A word or phrase that identifies or renames a noun or a pronoun that comes right before it |
| phrase | A group of words without a subject and its predicate (acts like a single part of speech) |
