noun | A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. |
verb | A word that shows action, being, or links a subject to a subject complement. |
pronoun | A word that takes the place of a noun. |
adjective | A word that modifies, or describes, a noun or pronoun. |
adverb | A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. |
interjection | A word that shows emotion but has no grammatical function. |
conjunction | A word that joins two words or two groups of words. |
preposition | A word that shows a relationship between its object and another word in the sentence. |
clause | A group of words that contains a subject and its predicate. |
prepositional phrase | A group of words beginning with a preposition |
subject | The noun or subject pronoun that the sentence is about. |
gerund | A noun made from an –ing verb |
participle | An adjective made out of a verb |
predicate | The verb and other words that are about the subject. |
infinitive | A noun or modifier made from the to- form of the verb |
independent clause | A group of words that expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence |
indirect object | A noun or object pronoun that is indirectly affected by the action verb, and that is located between the action verb and the direct object. |
dependent clause | A group of words that does NOT express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence (usually begins with a subordinating conjunction) |
direct object | A noun or object pronoun that receives the action of the action verb. |
subject complement | A noun, subject pronoun, or adjective that is linked to the subject by a linking verb and tells more about the subject. |
verbal | A verb form used as a different part of speech |
appositive | A word or phrase that identifies or renames a noun or a pronoun that comes right before it |
phrase | A group of words without a subject and its predicate (acts like a single part of speech) |
