Parts of Speech
| Question | Answer |

| Noun | Words that name people, places, things, ideas, activities and concepts. |
| Proper noun | the name of a specific person, place or thing. Always begin with a capital letter |
| common noun | a general word that can mean more than one person, place, or thing |
| Pronoun | words that replace nouns |
| Personal pronouns | I, me, my, mine, you, your, yours, he, him, his, she, her, hers, it, its, we, us, our, ours, they, them, their, and theirs |
| Demonstrative pronouns | this, that, these, and those |
| Antecedent | the noun that a pronoun stands for. EX: Miss Lease told us her classroom rules. her is the pronoun and its antecedent is Miss Lease |
| Verb | words that express action or condition |
| Action verb | tell that a person, place, or thing is doing, run, think, decide, read, and go are action verbs |
| Linking verb | tell what a person, place, or thing is ie: is, are, was, were, seem, and become |
| Helping verbs | have two or more words, such as is going, should have been, done and will be talking |
| Adjective | words that describe people, places, and things |
| Adjectives answer these questions | what kind? which one? how many? |
| Adjective articles | a , an, and the |
| When can pronouns be used as adjectives? | when they come before a noun |
| Adverb | word that describe action or descriptions (verbs, adjectives, and adverbs |
| Adverbs answer what questions | where? when? how? how much? |
| Preposition | tell what position a noun or pronoun is |
| Common prepositions | in, on, under, beside, below, to at, by, like, of, over, since, and with |
| Conjunction | word that connect words, groups of words, or sentences |
| Coordinating conjunctions | FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so |
| Interjection | word that show strong emotion EX: Wow! Yippee! Ouch! |
