Similes a comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as
Metaphor a comparison of two unlike nouns but does not use the word like or as.
Imagery a picture the poet creates with words that appeal to the reader's senses; sight, smell, touch, sound, and taste.
Onomatopoeia a word that makes a sound of the action it describes.
Personification comparison that give human qualities to inanimate objects.
Alliteration repetition of initial consonants of words.
Idioms an expression whose meanings cannot be inferred from the meanings of the words that it make up.
rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhymed words at the end of the lines in a stanza or verse of poetry.
assonance the repetition of vowel sounds.
Hyperbole this is a huge exaggeration
irony saying the opposite what is meant
internal rhyme srhyme within a line of a poem. it can rhyme with words with the line,or a word at the end of aline.
Couplet two lines long and the last wordon each line rhymes with each other. they are often silly.
quatrain always four lineslong and the end word follow a rhyming pattern.
