| Antagonist | The character that is against or opposes the protagonist |
| Character | The person in the story and his/her characteristics |
| Characteristics of a person | Physical appearance, what he/she says, thinks, feels, what he she/does or doesn't do, what others say about him/her, & how others react to him/her |
| External conflict | A struggle with a force outside of one's self |
| Internal conflict | Struggle within one's self |
| Person vs self conflict | The main character struggles with him/herself; with his/her own soul, ideas of right and wrong, physical limitations, choices, etc |
| Person vs person conflict | One character struggles against another character |
| Person vs nature conflict | The main character struggles with forces of nature or fate or circumstances of life |
| Person vs society conflict | The main character struggles agains ideas, practices, or customs of a group of other people |
| Mood or Atmosphere (setting) | The feeling created at the beginning of a story |
| Place (setting) | Geographical location; where the action of the story is taking place |
| Plot | The sequence of events that make up a story |
| Protagonist | The main character in the story with all major events having some importance to this character |
| Setting | The time and location in which the story takes place |
| Theme | Element on which the story is based |
| Time (setting) | When the story is taking place - historical period, time of day, year, etc. |
| Weather conditions (setting) | Rainy, sunny, stormy, etc. |
| Exposition | Sets the stage for the story/introduces the character |
| Rising Action | The part where the story continues to unfold; conflict develops |
| Climax | Big turning point of the story |
| Falling Action | The part of the story that transitions from climax to resolution |
| Resolution/Denouement | Occurs at the very end of the book; Ties up any loose ends |
| Inference | Making a judgement about the meaning of something using prior knowledge |
