constraint N. Something that restricts or limits. syn. restraint; restriction ant:liberty, independance Devin's broken leg contraints him from playing in the tournament.
dissuade V. to advise against; to persuade someone out of a course of action yn: discourage; deter ant: encourage, inspire The advisor dissuades the king from making a bad decision that would effect the city's economy.
falter V. to hesitate; to waver syn: sway; delay; stumble ant: persist;maintain;endure The suspect faltered when the detective asked him a difficult question to answer about the crime he commetted.
frail Adj. Easily broken; delicate syn: fragile, breakable ant: strong, robust The boy scout offers to help a frail, old lady cross the street.
hypothetical adj. assumed without proof; uncertain syn: supposed; theoretical ant: delighted; happy The scientist's hypothesis about the stars became true.
irate adj. extremely angry; enraged syn: furious; fuming ant: actual; real The irate tourist threw jellyfish at swimmers.
peninsula N. a piece of land that extends from the mainland into a body of water. The plane had to fly over the peninsula to get to the islands where we were taking our vacation to.
placid adj. calm; peaceful syn: tranquil;serene ant: turbulent; riotous The placid surroundings of the private beach pursuades the family to buy the lot.
prejudice N. An opinion formed without knowledge of the facts. An irrational suspicion or hostility toward a particular group, race, or religion. syn: bias; predisposition ant: fairness Caroline can't eat at a restaurant without prejudice.
prelude n. An introductory event, action, or peformance. syn: beginning, preface ant: finale: ending The prelude to the opening of the new school included a band playing and a barbeque.
profane adj. showing contempt for what is sacred; disrespectful to religion; vulgar syn: irreverent; wicked ant: pious; virtious Jimmy's profane statement in class gave him a detention.
puny adj. less normal than in size and strength syn: undersized; small ant: robust; sturdy
ruthless adj. Without compassion or mercy; harsh syn: callous; merciless ant: merciful; compassionate; lenient The ruthless storm swept up everything that got in its path.
skirmish n. a minor, short-lived battle syn: clash; scuffle ant: campaign; crusade Besides all of the small skirmish's on the football field, the game went very well for the Middle School champions.
