Social Stratification sociologists call this division of society into categories, ranks or classes
Social Inequality the unequal sharing of scarce rescources and social rewards

Power the ability to control the behavior of others, with or without their consent
Prestige the respect, honor, recognition, or courtesy an individual receives from other members of society
Socioeconomic Status rating that combines social factors such as educational level, occupational prestige, and place of residence with the economic factor of income
Reoutational Method individuals in the comminity are asked to rank other community members based on what they know of their characters and lifestyles
Subjective Method individuals are asked to determine their own social rank
Objective Method sociologists define social class by income, occupation, and education
Social Mobility the movement between or within social classes or strata
Horizontal Mobility refers to movement within a social class or stratum
Vertical Mobility the movement between social classes or strata
Intergenerational Mobility status differences generations in the same family
Povery standard of living that is below the minimum level considered adequate by society
Poverty Level the minimum income
Life Chances sociologists mean the likelihood that individuals have of sharing in the oportunities and benefits of society
Life Expectancy refers to the average number of years a person born in a particular year to live
Transfer Payments redistribute money among various segments of society
Ralf Dahrendorf suggests that each approach might be used to explain specific aspects of straticication
Gerhard Lenski he asserts that the usefulness of the theory depends on the society under study
