horizontal mobility refers to movement with a social class or stratum
vertical mobility on the other hand is the movement between social class or strata.
intergenerational mobility status difference between generations in the same family
poverty seen as a standard of living that is below the minimum level considered adequate by society
poverty level the government considers families with income levels below this amount to be poor
life chances sociologists mean the likelihood that individuals have of sharing the opportunities and benefits of society
transfer payments to redistribute money among various segments of society
