bronchiolitis Inflammation of the bronchioles
bronchoscope Instrument used to examine the bronchi
Cheyne-Stokes respiration gradual increase in respiration followed by apnea, then a repeat of the same cycle
croup An acute respiratory disease characterized by obstruction of the larynx, a barking cough, dyspnea, hoarseness, and stridor
cyanosis Dark blue condition of the skin and mucous membrane caused by oxygen deficiency
cystic fibrosis Inherited disease that affects the pancreas, respiratory system, and sweat glands

epistaxis Nosebleed
eupnea Good or normal breathing
expectoration The process by which saliva, mucus, or phlegm is expelled from the air passages
hemoptysis The spitting up of blood

hyperventilation Process of excessive ventilating, thereby increasing the air in the lungs beyonds the normal limit
hypoxia A condition of deficient amounts of oxygen in the inspired air
laryngeal Pertaining to the larynx
laryngitis Inflammation of the larynx
laryngoscope Instrument used to examine the larynx
mesothelioma A malignant tumor of mesothelium (serous membrane of the pleura) caused by the inhalation of asbestos

pulmonectomy Surgical excision of the lung or a part of a lung
pyothorax Pus in the chest cavity
rale An abnormal sound heard on auscultation of the chest; a crackling, rattling, or bubbling sound
respiratory distress syndrome (hyaline membrane disease) May occur in premature infant in which the lungs are not matured to the point of manufacturing lecithin, a pulmonary surfactant. Results in collapse of the alveoli, which leads to cyanosis and hypoxia
rhinoplasty Surgical repair of the nose
rhinorrhea Discharge from the nose
rhinovirus One of a subgroup of viruses that causes the common cold (coryza) in humans
rhonchus Rale or rattling sound in the throat or bronchial tubes caused by a partial obstruction
