| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| alveolus | Pertaining to a small air sac in the lungs |
| anthracosis | Black lung; a lung condition caused by inhalation of coal dust and silica |
| asphyxia | A condition in which there is a depletion of oxygen in the blood with an increase of carbon dioxide in the blood and tissues. Symptoms include dyspenia, cyanosis, and rapid pulse |
| atelectasis | A condition of imperfect dilation of the lungs; the collapse of an alveolus, a lobule, or a larger lung unit |
| bronchiectasis | Chronic diluation of a bronchus or bronchi, with a secondary infection that usually involves in the lower portion of a lung |
| bronchiolitis | Inflammation of the bronchioles |
| bronchoscope | Instrument used to examine the bronchi |
| Cheyne-Stokes respiration | gradual increase in respiration followed by apnea, then a repeat of the same cycle |
| croup | An acute respiratory disease characterized by obstruction of the larynx, a barking cough, dyspnea, hoarseness, and stridor |
| cyanosis | Dark blue condition of the skin and mucous membrane caused by oxygen deficiency |
| cystic fibrosis | Inherited disease that affects the pancreas, respiratory system, and sweat glands |
| diaphragmatocele | A hernia of the diaphragm |
| dysphonia | A condition of difficulty in speaking |
| dyspnea | Difficult in breathing |
| emphysema | Chronic pulmonary disease in which the bronchioles become obstructed with mucus |
| empyema | Pus in a body cavity, especially the pleural cavity |
| endotracheal | Pertaining to within the trachea |
| epistaxis | Nosebleed |
| eupnea | Good or normal breathing |
| expectoration | The process by which saliva, mucus, or phlegm is expelled from the air passages |
| hemoptysis | The spitting up of blood |
| hypernea | Excessive or rapid breathing |
| hyperventilation | Process of excessive ventilating, thereby increasing the air in the lungs beyonds the normal limit |
| hypoxia | A condition of deficient amounts of oxygen in the inspired air |
| laryngeal | Pertaining to the larynx |
| laryngitis | Inflammation of the larynx |
| laryngoscope | Instrument used to examine the larynx |
| mesothelioma | A malignant tumor of mesothelium (serous membrane of the pleura) caused by the inhalation of asbestos |
| nasopharyngitis | Inflammation of the nose and pharynx |
| olfaction | The process of smelling |
| oropharynx | Central portion of the throat that lies between the soft palate and upper portion of the epiglottis |
| orthopnea | Inability to breathe unless in an upright or straight position |
| palatopharyngoplasty | Type of surgery that relieves snoring and sleep apnea by removing the uvula and the tonsils and reshaping the lining at the back of the throat to enlarge the air passageway |
| pertussis | An acute, infectious disease cuased by a bacterium Bordetella pertussis; it is characterized by a peculiar paroxysmal cough ending in a "whooping" sound; also called whooping cough |
| pharyngitis | Inflammation of the pharynx |
| pleurisy | Inflammation of the pleura caused by injury, infection, or a tumor |
| pleuritis | Inflammation of the pleura |
| pneumoconiosis | A condition of the lung caused by the inhalation of dust |
| pneumonia | Inflammation of the lung caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or chemical irritants |
| pneumonitis | Inflammation of the lung |
| pneumothroax | Collection of air in the chest cavity |
| polyp | A tumor with a stem; may occur where there are mucous membranes |
| pulmonectomy | Surgical excision of the lung or a part of a lung |
| pyothorax | Pus in the chest cavity |
| rale | An abnormal sound heard on auscultation of the chest; a crackling, rattling, or bubbling sound |
| respiratory distress syndrome (hyaline membrane disease) | May occur in premature infant in which the lungs are not matured to the point of manufacturing lecithin, a pulmonary surfactant. Results in collapse of the alveoli, which leads to cyanosis and hypoxia |
| rhinoplasty | Surgical repair of the nose |
| rhinorrhea | Discharge from the nose |
| rhinovirus | One of a subgroup of viruses that causes the common cold (coryza) in humans |
| rhonchus | Rale or rattling sound in the throat or bronchial tubes caused by a partial obstruction |
| sarcoidosis | Chronic granulomatous condition that may involve almost any organ system of the body. Lungs are usually involved and this causes dyspena on exertion |
| severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) | Serious form of pneumonia, resulting in acute respiratory distress and sometimes death |
| sinutitis | Inflammation of a sinus |
| spirometer | An instrument used to measure the volume of respired air |
