Vocab Words for Unit 12

QuestionAnswer
Hyperinflation of 1923 Occured in Germany and Europe after WWI. One billion German Marks equaled one gold mark. (The currency was worthless). 2/3 of the people were unemployed.
Weimar Republik A new liberal and fully democratic government in Germany in 1919. It was very progessive and instilled voting rights for women and civil liberties for citizens.
Treaty of Rapallo (1922) A peacetime treaty between Germany and Russia. An economic alliance. Germany needed a market and resources, while Russia needed loans to reconstruct their economy.
Gustav Stresemann He led the German Foreign Ministry to impliment a flexible, peaceful policy towards France and Britain. By using peaceful tactics, he hoped to win the support of the Americans.
Saar/Rhineland A demilitarized area in western Germany following WWI. The Saar region was returned to the French.
Locarno Pact A series of treaties between Germany, France, and Britain that occured in 1925. The countries promised never to go to war against each other again, and Britain promised to uphold all the demilitarized zones. Was a very positive international ordeal.
"Spirit of Locarno" An atmosphere of goodwill that existed between European countires after the Locarno Pact.
Invasion of the Ruhr An attempt by France to uphold the treaty of Versailles all by themselves. They invaded Germany's Ruhr Valley with the intention of collecting reparation payments. Only isolated France from its allies and France later pulled out.
Maginot Line A series of defensive fortifications built by the French on their border with Germany. It showed that they did not trust Germany.
League of Nations An international body of nations united to protect and preserve the peace. The USA did not want to join. The League had no weapons or supplies to enforce its decisions which meant it was useless.
Totalitarianism A political system in which the state, usually under the control of a single person, recognizes no limits to its control. Use propaganda and restrictions of rights to stay in power. The same as absolutism. Hitler was totalitarianist.
Reparations Fees that Germany had to pay to the victorious allies at the end of WWI. They were based on the damage inflicted to each country.
Dawes Plan A plan to solve the problems of reparation, as they were crippling countries like Germany. Was made by American banker Charles Dawes. Gave Germany a more acceptablr reparations schedule and loans from the USA to start the payments.
Young Plan A plan to help stabilize Europe economically. Was created by an American business man Owen Young. It transferred $100 million to Germnay to help them with Reparation payments.
Great Depression An international economic disaster that occured in 1929. In October, the American stock market collapsed and this led to the depression.
Smoot-Hawley Tariff An American bill made in 1930 that created massive tarifs against any imported product. Was in response to the depression.
