| Active voice | verb that is an action(as opposed to passive voice). EX. Farzam explodes the building |
| Ad hominem | an argument attacking an individuals character rather than the issue ex. campaign slogains bad-mouthing the other runners |
| Aesthetic | relating to beauty or to a branch of philosophy concerned with art beauty and taste Ex. a beautiful piece of art |
| Alliteration | repitition of similar constant sounds in the beginning of words Ex. she sells seashells by the seashore |
| Allegory | a narrative in which literal meanings corresponds with symbolic meanings Ex. Animal Farm = Russia |
| Allusion | a reference within a literary work to a historical or literary person, place or event Ex. a reference to the bible |
| Anachronism | the misplacement of a person, occurrence, custom, or idea in time. Ex. mentioning a watch in a story when the watch doesn't exist during that time |
| Anadiplosis | repetition of a word at the end of a phrase, sentence, ect. which then begins the next phrase,sentence, ect. Ex. I ran to the store. The store had plenty of oranges for me |
| Analogy | a comparison between two things that are otherwise unlike. Often analogies draw a comparison between something abstracct and something more concrete. Ex. trying to get the confession was like pulling teeth |
| Anaphora | repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive phrases and sentences. Ex. We shall win. We shall celebrate. We shall have time off. |
