| Ad hominem | argument attacking an individuals character rather than the issue Ex: You are too conceited |
| Aesthetic | relating to a branch of philosophy concerned with art, beauty, & taste Ex: |
| Allegory | narrative in which the story is directly symbolizing an actual event Ex: Animal Farm= Russian Revolution |
| Alliteration | repetition of similar sounds in the beginning of words Ex: she sells seashells by the sea shore |
| Anachornism | misplacement of a person or event in time Ex: in Julius Caesar they mention watches but wathces were not invented then |
| Anadiplosis | repetiotion of a word at the end of a phrase, which then begins the next phrase Ex: I ran to the store. The store had plenty of oranges for me. |
| Analogy | comparing 2 things that are otherwise unlike Ex: a slow cheetah. |
| Anaphora | reptition of a word at the beginning of successive phrases and sentences. Ex: I fell to the ground. I hit my face on the ground. The ground was hard. |
| Antagonist | person or obstacle that gets in the way of a the protagonist's goal Ex: The fire stopped him from saving the princess. |
| Anecdote | breif narriation of an event or person Ex: Grandpa loves to tell anecdotes of his childhood. |
| Antecedent | what noun the pronoun is replacing Ex: I love reading. It makes me happy. antecedent of "it" is "reading." |
| Antihero/ Antiheroine | protagonist who is not a good person Ex: Madame Defarge |
