ad hominem an argument attacking an individual's character rather than than the issue
aesthetic relating to beauty or to of philosophy
allegory a narrative in which literal meaning correspond directly with symbolic meaning . Animal farm is an allegory of the russian revolution .
allusion a reference within a literary work to a historical or literary person place or evevt .
anachronism the misplacement of a person, occurence,custom,or idea in time . Ex. in juius ceaser the say watch as in that time they didnt have watches then, but they were reffering to the authors time period(shakespear)
anadiplosis repitition of a word at the end of a phase , sentence , etc. which then begins the next phase , clause, sentence ,etc. EX . I ran to the store . The store had a lot of oranges for me.
analogy a comparison between two things that are otherwise unlike .
anaphora repitition of a word or phrase at the beggining of succsesssive phrases and sentences.
antagonist the person or obstacle that gets in the way of the protagonist's accomplishment of his /her goal . an obstacle that keeps a forward mover from going ahead.
anecdote a brief narration of an event or person.
antecedent what noun the pronoun is pronoun is replacing . "I love reading. It makes me happy. The antecedent of "it" is "reading"
antihero/antiheroine a protagonist that is not a good person.
antimetabole reversing the order of repeated words or phrases (example-all work and no play is a harmful to mental health as all play and no work.
