What is the main function of the digestive system? The digestive system functions to utilize food material for the maintenance of all the other systems of the birds body.
What does the birds digestive system depend on? enzymes (proteins) which chemically break down the food
What is the mouths function? The mouth contains slivary glands taht secrete saliva containing enzymes which begin to break down the food.
What does a bird not have like humans for the beginning of digestion? teeth
What does the bird do since it doesn't have teeth in the very beginning of digestion? A bird does not have teeth to chew its food but does have a tongue which pushes the food to the back of the mouth so that it can begin its passage way down the rest of the digestive tract.
What is the esophagus? The esophagus is the tube that connects the mouth with the rest of the digestive tract.
What is the crop? The crop is located in the neck region & is used to store food until the bird is ready to digest more food.
What is the proventriculous? the true stomach
What enzymes do the proventriculous or true stomach secrete? hydrochloric acid (HCI) and pepsin.
What is the gizzard? The gizzard is made up of 2 smooth muscles and contains grit or stones and acts as the birds teeth by grinding food.
What is the small intestine made up of? the duodenum & the lower small intestine.
What is the small intestine important for? the absorption of nutrients
What is the cecum? 2 blind pouches that, like our appendix, have no real function?
What is the rectum or large intestine do? its where additional absorption of water takes place.
Where is the pancreas? the center of the of the duodenal loop
What does the pancreas secrete? pancreatic juice
What is the pancreatic juice's function? it neutralizes the HCl (hydrochloric acid) secreted by the preventriculous and helps break down fat
What does the liver produce? bile
what is bile? a dark green substance that is necessary for the absorption of fats.
Where is bile stored? the gal bladder
What happens when food passes into the duodenum? it causes the gal bladder to empty the bile into the small intestine.
The cloaca is the end of what 3 tracts? digestive, reproductive, and excretory tracts
What is the cloaca important for? important for absorbing any moisture from foodstuffs which will leave the body.
Why is the cloaca important for egg laying? its important since it is here that the egg from the females reproductive tract is flipped in order that it will be laid large end 1st
