Text Features at the 7th Grade Level

index an ABC list of topics in the text at the end of the text listing the page numbers on which they appear
italics slanted text
map representation of a region
picture a visual representation or image on a flat surface
sidebar short, often boxed, piece of info printed along side another artically that typically presents info related to the main article
subheading heading or title of a subdivision of printed subject
summary sentence sentence that clearly reviews, in condensed form, what article or paragraph was about
table of contents a list of divisions of chapters or articles & pages on which they appear
title an identifying name given to a work
topic sentence first sentence of a paragraph that clearly introduces the topic or main idea of the paragraph
underlining a line under something used to indicate emphasis or italic type
