Words and Definitions for 8th grade NC EOG word 21-40

QuestionAnswer
Clarify Make more clear and easy to understand.
Climax The most important event in the story; the moment when a conflict is resolved.
Comedy A play with a happy ending - usually funny although it does not have to be.
Compare (comparison) Tell how two things are alike.
Conclusion A decision a reader makes about what is happening in the story based on evidence.
Conflict The problem that characters in a story are trying to solve or resolve.
Connect Explain how ideas in a selection are similar to other texts and to the real world.
Context Clues Words around an unknown word that help you figure out the word's meaning.
Contrast Tell how two things are different.
Descriptive writing Writing that gived lots of detail about a person, place or thing.
Dialect A variety of English spoken by a certain or specific group of people.
Dialogue Words characters say to one another in a piece of writing.
Dictionary A book of words and their definitions.
Distort Twist the facts away rom their true meaning.
Drama A piece of writing intended to be performed by actors.
Dramatize Change a story or piece of writing into a drama or play.
Effect The result of a cuase. What happens after.
Emphasize Point something out as being important.
Emotional Factors Feelings that make a character act in a certain way.
Encyclopedia A book or set of books containing facts and explainations on a variety of subjects.
