| Act | A group of scenes in a play. |
| Affix | A small part added to the beginning or end of a word to change its meaning. |
| Alliteration | Repetition of initial consonant sounds: Ex. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. |
| Almanac | A book containing lists of facts. Published annually. |
| Analogy | A comparison between two pairs of things: Ex. Apple:Red :: Banana:Yellow |
| Apparant | Clearly stated; easy to see. |
| Apply | Transfer an idea from your reading to a situation in real life. |
| Assume | Take something for granted. |
| Atlas | A book of maps. |
| Attitude | How the author feels about his/her topic. |
| Author | The person who wrote the selection. |
| Autobiography | The story of a person's life written by that person. |
| Background Information | A summary of events that happened BEFORE the story began. |
| Beginning (exposition) | The start of a selection. Usually included information about major characters, setting and background events. |
| Bias | A strong opinion about a topic that influences that way a writer writes. |
| Biography | The story of a person's life written by another person. |
| Cast of Characters | A list of all of the characters in a play found at the beginning of a script. |
| Cause | An event that makes something else(effect) happen. |
| Character | A person, animal or object that participates in the events of the story. |
| Characteristics | Details that describe what a character is like inside and out. |
