Common command words seen on standardized tests

| Infer | take what you know, plus clues from the text |
| Evaluate | make a judgment on the good and the bad, to judge its worth |
| Formulate | create, decide, figure out, build, construct, put it all together, plan |
| Describe | tell in your own words, tell who, what, when, where, why, and how |
| Support | tell why, give reasons, prove it, give details |
| Explain | tell all about, tell who, what, when, where, why, and how |
| Summarize | retell the key points, give just the facts, give reasons why things happen |
| Compare | how two or more objects or people are the same, find the similarities |
| Contrast | how two or more objects or people are different, find the differences |
