the study of nature of things such as motion, forces, energy, matter, heat, sound, light, and the composition of atoms physics
the study of how matter is put together, how atoms combine to form molecules, and how the molecules combine to make up matter chemistry
the study of matter that is alive biology
what are equations? a way to express relationships between concepts
who are the scientists credited for founding the scientific method galileo and bacon
what are the steps of the scientific method? recognize a problem, make an educated guess about a possible answer, predict consequences of the hypothesis, perform experiment to test prediction, formulate the simplest general rule that organizes the main ingredients of hypothesis, prediction, exp.outcome
what happens in a controlled experiment? there are usually two or more experimental groups whose results are compared to a control group that is kept under normal, standard conditions
variables? hypothesis? independent-changed on purpose dependent-resulting change hypothesis - if... then... statement
what does a scientist do if evidence is found that contradicts a law, principle, or hypothesis? it must be abandoned or changed, a single verifiable experiment that shows the idea is wrong is reliable
how are theories from scientific and everyday related? they are both hypotheses, everyday-not tested scientific-tested
for a hypothesis to be scientific... what is science? must be a test to prove it wrong (testable) method of answering theoretical questions, technology is a method of solving practical problems
domains of science, art, and religion religion-concerned with the source, purpose, and meaning of everything art-concerned with the value of human interactions as they pertain to the senses science-concerned with discovering and recording natural phenomena
why dont science and religion contradict each other? they have different domains, religion-nature's purpose science-natural order
progress in the past... vision of the cosmos, slower than it is now
