| catharsis | the release of emotion by the audience at the end of a tragedy due to feelings of pity and fear evoked by the tragedy |
| chorus | lower rank characters in a drama who speak in unison to comment on the action of the play |
| comedy | ancient Greek form of drama in which confusions and deceptions are unraveled with amusement along the way ending in resolution, restitution, and reconciliation |
| dramatic monologue | a lengthy speech often with accompanying actions to one or more silent listeners |
| stichomythia | dialogue form of single lines uttered by single speakers (finishing each other's sentences) |
| classical | Greek and Latin prose or poetry style and content, typified by a restraint of feelings and form, particularly popular in the 18th century |
| colloquial | informal language of conversational speech |
| commentary | chronological paraphrasing and explanation of a text |
| contextuality | historical, social, and cultural background of a text |
| denouement | the unfolding of the final stages of a plot when all is revealed |
| deus ex machina | literally the god from the machine; a supernatural intervention that resolves a difficult confrontation or furthers the action |
| dialect | a variety of language used in a particular area distinguished by features of grammar and/or vocabulary (soda vs. pop) |
| dialogue | the direct speech of characters engaged in conversation |
| diction | choice of words |
| didactic | with the intention of teaching the reader and instilling moral values |
| doggerel | trivial verse constrained by regularity of meter and rhyme |
| double entende | expression with 2 meanings, one of them course (dirty) |
| drama | composition in verse or prose involving conflict which is intended to be performed through action and dialogue |
| dramatic irony | when the audience knows something the character speaking does not. Creates humor or tension |
