Morphemes smallest unit of linguistic meaning or function
Derivational morphemes morpheme added to a stem or root to form a new word that could result in syntactic category..er added to verb kick makes noun kicker.
Inflectional morpheme bound grammatical morpheme that is affixed to a word according to a rule of syntax..3rd person singular verb suffix s.
Bound morphemes example "en" must be attached or bound to another morpheme for its actual meaning
free morphemes constitute words by themselves and can function on its own.
Affix bound morpheme attached to stem or root. For examples prefix, suffix, infix, circumfix, stem and root.
prefix an affix attached to the beginning of a morpheme or stem...like the in in inoperable.
suffix an affix attached to the end of a morpheme or stem like "er"
infix a bound morpheme in the middle of another morpheme
coinage construction and or invention of new words that become part of the lexicon for example, podcast
morphology study of structure of words, the components of grammar that includes the rules of word formation.
compounds words made up of two different words that result in a different meaning..washcloth..childproof
blend words composed of the parts of more than one word like the word smog made from smoke and fog
backformations creation of a new word by removing an affix from an old word..donate from donation...
snytax study of the sentence patterns of language.
What do the syntax rules do? THey combine words into phrases, and phrases into sentences. These rules specify the correct word order for a language.
