| Characterization | how an author creates a character (by what they say or do) |

| Imagery | a description that creates an image in your mind |
| Symbolism | something that represents something else |
| Protagonist | the leading character |
| Antagonist | the character who opposes the protagonist |
| Mood | the overall atmosphere or emotional feeling of a work |
| Tone | the author's attitude or feeling toward a subject |
