Motherless Brooklyn English Vocab

Tourette (n) A condition in which somebody experiences multiple ticks and twitches and utters involuntary vocal grunts and obscene speech
Placate (vt) To make somebody less angry, upset, or hostile, usually by doing or saying things to please him or her
Complacent (adj) 1. self-satisfied, usually in an unreflective way and without being aware of possible dangers 2. Eager to please
Echolalia (n) The compulsive repetition of words spoken by somebody else, often a sighn of a psychiatric disorder
Complicit (adj) Involved in something illegal or wrong
Redundant (adj) Not needed or no longer needed
Expedient (adj) Appropriate, advisable, or usefull in a situation that requires action
Garrulous (adj) Excessively or pointlessly talkative
Egalitarian (adj) Maintaining, relating to, or based on a belief that all people are, in principle, equal and should enjoy equal social, political, and economic rights and oppurtunities
Monolithic (adj) Consisting of or formed into a tall column of solid stone
Prodigious (adj) Very impressive or amazing
Malleable (adJ) Easily persuaded or influenced by others
Precocious (adj) More developed, especially mentally, than is usual or expected at a particular age or showing such advanced development
Adamant (adj) Very determined and not influenced by repeals to reconsider
Incongruous (adj) Unsuitable, strange, or out of place in a particular setting or context
Simulacrum (n) A representation or image of something
Guile (n) A cunning, deceitful and treacherous quality or type of behavior, or particular skill and cleverness in tricking or decieving people
Pristine (adj) So clean and need as to look as good as new
Anomaly (n) Something that deviates from the norm or from expectations
Banal (adj) Boringly ordinary and lacking in origionality
Munificent (adj) Very generous in giving
Familial (adj) Relating to or involving a family
Dormant (adj) Temporarily inactive or out of use
Herculean (adj) Requiring a great deal of strength, stamina, or recourses
Sycophantic (adj) The quality of flattering a person with power for personal gain
Penumbra (n) An indistinct area, especially a stake in which something is unclear or uncertain
Indolent (adj) Lathargic and not showing an interest or making any effort
Nuance (n) A very slight difference in meaning, feeling, tone, or color
Acuity (n) Keeness of hearing sight or intellect
Chimerical (n) Non-existent, existing only in somebody's imagination, or widly improbable or unrealistic
Conundrum (n) A riddle, especially one with an answer in a form of a play on words
Emulate (vt) To try hard to equal or surpass somebody or something, especially by intimidation
Permutation (n) An arrangement of items created by moving or reordering them
Mellifluous (adj) Pleasent and soothing to listen to, and sweet or rich in tone
Apotheosis (n) The highest point of glory, power, or importance
Solipsistic (adj) The self is the only thing that exists, self absorbed
