Motion and Forces

Reference Point The location from which a change in position is measured.
Position An object's location.
Motion A change in position.
Inertia An object's resistance to changes in its motion.
Speed The distance an object travels over a period of time.
Velocity Speed with direction.
Acceleration A change in velocity.
Vector A quantity that has both size and direction; is represented by an arrow.
Force Any push or pull on an object.
Buoyancy An upward force exerted on an object by liquids or gases.
Gravity A force of attraction between all objects in the universe.
Weight The force of gravity.
Friction A force that opposes the motion of an object and produces heat.
Magnetic Force The force of attraction or repulsion by a magnet.
Balanced Forces Are equal forces that do not cause a change in motion.
Unbalanced Forces Are unequal forces that always cause a change in motion.
Kinetic Energy Energy in motion.
Potential Energy Stored energy.
Newton The unit for force.
Joule The unit for work and energy.
