Family A group of poeple related by blood, marriage, or adoption who live together or share resources.
Nuclear Family Consists of one or both parents and their children
Family of Orietation The nuclear family into which the persons is born or adopted.
Family of Procreation Consisting of the individual, his or he spouse, and their children.
Extended Family Consists of two or more generations: family, grandparents, parents, children, uncles, aunts and cousins.
Kinship To a network of people who are related by marriage, birthm or adoption.
Marriage The set of norms that establishes and characterizes the relationship between between married individuals.
Monogamy The marriage of one man to on woman
Polygamy Marriage with multiple partners.
Polygyny In which a man is permitted to marry more than one woman at a time.
Polyandry In which a woman is permitted to marry more than one man at a time.
Patrilocality Residential pattern in which a newly married couple is expected to live with or near the husbands parents.
Matrilocality Residential pattern in which a newly married couple are expected to live near or with the wifes parents.
Neolcality Residential pattern in which a newly married couple is free to set up their residence apart from both sets of parents.
Patrillineal Descent Decent pattern in which kinship is traced through the the fathers family.
Matrillineal Decent Decent system in which kinship is traced the the mothers family.
Bilateral Decent Decent system in which kinship is traced through both parents.
Patriarchy In which the father holds most of the authority.
Matriarchy In which the mother holds most of the authority.
Egalitarian The mother and father share authority.
Incest Taboo is a norm forbbidding sexual relations or marriage between certain relatives.
Homogamy Tendency for individual to marry people who have social characteristics similar to their own.
Heretogamy Tendecy for individuals to marry people who have social characteristics different from their own.
Dual-earner families Families in which both husband and wife have jobs.
Sandwhich Generations They are caugt between the needs of their children and those of their aging parents.
Voluntary Childlesnence Conscious choice to remain childless.
Bilocality Allows the newly married couple to choose whether they will live near the husbands or the wifes parents.
